e hear all the time how hard it is to find good bagels out here in Phoenix. But honestly, we just think people haven’t discovered some of the hidden bagel shop gems we have. So after some initial nominations, we set out to create the first #BestBagelsinPHX contest on Instagram. The contest took place between February 21 – March 14, 2021, on Instagram (@jewishphoenix), where hundreds of bagels were eaten and photos were posted tagging their favorite bagel shops and our account.

We invited some of our personal favorite shops to participate in the contest and they all happily hopped on board and contributed a gift card to five lucky voters. The votes came in daily and after the final tally, a winner was chosen. Read more about the nominated shops and scroll down to see the overall Best Bagels in PHX winner for 2021. Hope you had as much fun researching as we did! 🥯

BAGELFELD BAGELS
A Brooklyn born bagel maker, Bagelfeld bagels are all hand rolled and cooked in Phoenix. They are always fresh and can be found daily at their newly opened storefront in Central Phoenix; Stoop Kid AZ at The Churchill; Wednesdays at Uptown Phoenix Farmers Market; and Saturdays at Uptown Phoenix Farmers Market, Nelson’s Meat & Fish and Downtown Phoenix Farmers Market. BONGIORNO BAGELS
It didn’t have to take a lot of convincing for us to drive out to Gilbert to check out this popular bagel shop. Many people raved and convinced us that the drive would be worth it for their homemade bagels and tasty sandwiches. Bongiorno Bagels is a family-run shop that was founded in 2017 by New York natives, John Bongiorno and his father-in-law, Ed Cancro. They ship in water from New York to make their bagels fresh daily and claim that is what sets their bagels apart. We aren’t sure it is just the water that makes these bagels so delicious, but we know that you’ll want to stock up when you make the drive out. The Fireman sandwich with lox, scallion cream cheese, onion, tomato and capers on an everything bagel is definitely not to be missed. They are currently open Thursday – Sunday so make sure to schedule a trip to visit soon.

CHOMPIE’S
Always consistent and fresh, Chompie’s has been a family favorite for many of us Arizona natives since they opened in 1979. They are much more than just bagels and offer a wide menu of Jewish comfort-food favorites like matzo ball soup and latkes. Chompie’s has multiple locations throughout the valley and also has a separate kosher bakery that produces breads, bagels and baked goods to local grocery stores. Chances are, you have also enjoyed your fair share of Chompie’s bagels, and we love supporting this locally-owned restaurant. Fun fact: Chompie’s appeared last year on the Cooking Channel’s Man v. Food show where the host Casey Webb came to Chompie’s Scottsdale location to beat the A Day at the Deli Challenge for the show’s eighth season.

COPPER STAR COFFEE
We have to thank our Instagram followers for sharing this new favorite coffee shop with us. This locally owned coffee shop also offers smoothies, teas, breakfast, brunch, sandwiches, salads, and much more. But they bake their bagels and make their cream cheese fresh daily, which we think makes this a must-try. Currently, you can order inside the shop or forget parking and visit through their convenient drive-through. We loved enjoying their rosemary bagels with pesto cream cheese and deliciously smooth ice coffee on the quiet patio. The staff is friendly and there seems to be quite a local following. We’ve already planned on bringing more friends to check it out, and we know you will feel the same way after trying for yourself.

NEW YORK BAGELS ‘N BIALYS
Another family favorite, we remember enjoying their bagels and bialys on the weekends growing up. We love stopping by the Scottsdale Road location, because we always tend to run into a familiar face or two. New York Bagels ‘N Bialys (NYBB) offers a full menu of tasty deli favorites from sandwich’s to chicken noodle soup. Their bagels are packed with flavor, and kids love the strawberry and chocolate chip bialys. Most of their bagels and bialys are kosher, which is another reason the restaurant is a favorite in Jewish Phoenix. With three different locations, NYBB is ready to serve Scottsdale with fresh bagels and delicious food.
